THE HAGUE, Netherlands  A global group funding the battle against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in impoverished nations worldwide is urging donors to keep paying for the fight even as the economic crisis forces budget cuts.

The Global Fund is outlining the lifesaving work it can finance in developing countries from 2011-13 if donors pledge $13 billion, $17 billion or $20 billion.

Pledges will be made at an Oct. 5 conference at U.N. headquarters.The fund’s executive director Michel Kazatchkine told The Associated Press on Wednesday he is “very concerned” that the global economic meltdown could make rich countries scale back their contributions.But he says the fund’s success over the past eight years against the killer diseases makes it clear the effort is saving millions of lives.(AP)

New Delhi: The government Monday allowed export of 10,000 tonnes of sugar to the European Union (EU), at a time when the UPA regime is desperately trying to bring down prices of the sweetener in the domestic market.The DGFT has allocated a quantity of 10,000 tonnes of white or refined sugar for export to the EU for the fiscal 2009-10 (sugar season October 2009 – September 2010) through state-run trading firm Indian Sugar Exim Corporation. Indian Sugar Exim Corporation, which is the designated agency for export of sugar to the EU, will export the commodity under a preferential quota agreement, a DGFT notice said. Although, officially there in no ban on export of sugar, prior approval from authorities is required, which the Food Ministry is not granting since January 2009. Sugar prices in India have been on a rise due to supply shortage. Sugar prices rose by 58.96 percent in January year-on-year. The exported sugar will be received by the EU duty free, under a special concessions provided for after conclusion of the General Agreement on Trade and Tariff.

One in six young people eats a salt-laden ready-meal or takeaway every day, a survey shows.Many have three or more a week, but an astonishing 16 per cent indulge daily.Only half of teenagers realise the high-salt content of such foods, researchers found.Across all ages, nine out of ten people knew that too much salt was bad for their health, but 40 per cent did not know that adults should eat no more than 6g – or a teaspoonful – a day.The survey of 3,000 people was released by Siemens and The Stroke Association to raise awareness of the hazards of ‘ hidden’ salt in processed foods.Eating high levels of salt and taking too little exercise can lead to high blood pressure, which is a major cause of stroke.However, 64 per cent of people told researchers they were unconcerned about their salt intake, while 57 per cent said they had no idea how much they were eating.
Under-18s were the most likely to check the salt content of food (21 per cent read product labels, compared to a national average of 10 per cent).
