2 WARSAW, Ind, boys accused of killing stepdad to run away

WARSAW, Ind.  Two young friends from a quiet, middle-class neighborhood in northern Indiana wanted to run away to Arizona so badly, prosecutors say, that they gunned down a stepfather who stood in the way of their plans.The two alleged triggerman ages 15 and 12 hadn’t shown any signs of violence before the older boy’s 49-year-old stepfather, Phillip Danner, was shot to death in his home last week, according to neighbors and family members who testified at a hearing Thursday in which a judge ruled the boys would be tried for murder as adults.

But sheriff’s Detective Jonathan Tyler testified that the boys and two of their friends, who didn’t take part in the actual slaying, plotted for at least a month to kill Danner, so they could run off to Arizona.On the day of the slaying, the boys met at a park before going to the older boy’s home near Lake Wawasee, between Fort Wayne and South Bend, where he had gathered two of Danner’s handguns, Tyler said. The two defendants waited in the living room until Danner appeared in a kitchen doorway, Tyler said, then shot him four times — once in the eye, once in the wrist, and twice in the chest.

Neighbors and family members who testified Thursday said the 15-year-old and 12-year-old were good students who stayed out of serious trouble at school. The worst trouble either had been in came last year when the 15-year-old was put under juvenile court supervision for four months after he shot a BB gun at a neighbor riding a lawn mower.

“Obviously, something’s gone very wrong,” the 15-year-old boy’s mother said. “I don’t know what that is. I would like to know what that is.”One of the two other boys who authorities say took part in the planning is a 12-year-old who is being detained on juvenile charges of aiding a murder. The other boy hasn’t been charged.According to police, the two 12-year-olds and the 15-year-old met up hours after the shooting and took off in a car belonging to the 15-year-old’s mother’s, who was in Florida on vacation.

Investigators still aren’t certain why the boys wanted to go to Arizona. One theory is that the boys — who allegedly killed Danner and headed west on April 20, an unofficial holiday for marijuana users — intended to sell pot. Police said alcohol, marijuana and a gun were found in the car when the boys were caught in Peru, Ill., about 5 a.m. the next day.

Attorneys for the 12-year-old and 15-year-old murder suspects stressed Thursday that both boys were presumed innocent and urged Judge Duane Huffer to treat them as juveniles, saying their chances of rehabilitation would be greater in the juvenile system than in adult prison. But Huffer said the juvenile system wasn’t equipped to deal with crimes of such magnitude.

“The act alleged was violent and unprovoked,” Huffer said.Both boys are being held in the county jail and could face an initial hearing in adult court as early as Friday, according to Chief Deputy Prosecutor Daniel Hampton.Calvin Carr, 35, Danner’s neighbor, said he thought the 15-year-old was “a good kid” but recently became suspicious that the boy might be smoking cigarettes and pot. After that, Carr said, the boy had stopped coming over to Carr’s house to hang out with his children.Mike Koher, a longtime friend of Danner’s who often went motorcycling with the family on weekends, saw no sign of any trouble in his friend’s relationship with his stepson. Sheriff’s officials said they had found no sign of any abuse.

“I never seen anything out of the ordinary,” said Koher, 53. “They seemed to get along.”He said the teen rode behind on his stepfather’s Harley-Davidson on family trips while his mother rode her own motorcycle. He also said Danner bought dirt bikes for himself and his stepson so they could ride together and they went fishing together in Danner’s bass boat.”It seemed real normal to me. Being a step’s always tough, but I would never have saw this coming if that’s what actually happened,” Koher said.

Express mail giant FedEx Corp. is preparing to roll out the first of four new all-electric delivery trucks in Los Angeles next month, but Chief Executive Frederick W. Smith said there were still significant barriers to bringing large numbers of zero-emission and low-emission commercial vehicles into service quickly in the U.S.

“We would like to significantly expand the number of vehicles we have in this category,” Smith said. “But the capital costs are 50% higher than regular vehicles. Production hasn’t ramped up enough to bring down the expense. The regulatory requirements are arduous, and there aren’t enough tax credits or incentives.”

On Friday, FedEx’s new truck wrapped up a road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles along historic Route 66, with a final stop at the Santa Monica Pier.The truck, which is slightly smaller and more rounded than the conventional FedEx delivery van, was built in Indiana by Navistar International Corp. and designed by Modec of Coventry, England. FedEx first tested a small number of similar trucks in Europe.”It’s time for the truck manufacturing industry to create its version of the Prius: clean, affordable and widely available for truck fleets,” Smith said as a driver put the new electric truck through its paces on downtown L.A. streets last week.

Smith said that his company’s interest in greatly reducing reliance on fossil fuels dates to 2000, when it teamed with the Environmental Defense Fund to develop a cleaner delivery truck. Three years later, Eaton Corp. and Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. built the FedEx hybrid truck, which was put into service in 2004. FedEx said hybrid trucks improved fuel economy 42%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% and cut particulate pollution 96%.

There were only about 1,200 hybrid trucks on the road in the U.S. in 2009, according to the Environmental Defense Fund. The FedEx fleet includes 319 diesel-electric hybrids among its 27,000 trucks in its Express division; in the Los Angeles region, 70 of the roughly 1,000 delivery trucks are hybrids.Worldwide, FedEx said that it would have 1,869 alternative-fuel vehicles in its inventory by the end of June, but Smith said it wasn’t nearly enough. Using low-emission vehicles, FedEx saved 45 million gallons of fuel, thereby avoiding 452,573 metric tons of CO2 emissions between fiscal years 2005 and 2008, the company said.

In the fiscal third quarter that ended Feb. 28, the company said it spent $694 million on gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.John. E. Formisano, FedEx vice president of global vehicles, said the Navistar electric truck could haul 3,300 pounds and has a range of 100 miles on a single charge.

Two more electric trucks are also going to be tested in Los Angeles, but FedEx hasn’t selected a manufacturer yet.FedEx executives acknowledge that a handful of electric trucks will barely make a dent in the company’s fuel consumption and noxious emissions. But by commissioning and testing such vehicles, FedEx helps move the technology forward, they said.”They have been tested in colder climates,” Formisano said. “We’re going to see how they operate in Los Angeles now.”

SAN FRANCISCO  As Ronak Ray hunted for his flight gate, he prepared for the prospect of a security guard peering through his clothes with a full body scanner. But Ray doesn’t mind: what he gives up in privacy he gets back in security.”I think it’s necessary,” said Ray, a 23-year-old graduate student who was at San Francisco International Airport to fly to India. “Our lives are far more important than how we’re being searched.”Despite controversy surrounding the scans, Ray’s position was typical of several travelers interviewed at various airports Wednesday by The Associated Press.Airports in five other U.S. cities are also using full body scanners at specific checkpoints instead of metal detectors. In addition, the scanners are used at 13 other airports for random checks and so-called secondary screenings of passengers who set off detectors.

But many more air travelers may have to get used to the idea soon. The Transportation Security Administration has ordered 150 more full body scanners to be installed in airports throughout the country in early 2010, agency spokeswoman Suzanne Trevino said.Dutch security officials have said they believe such scanners could have detected the explosive materials Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab of Nigeria is accused of trying to ignite aboard a Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight Christmas Day.Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has 15 full body scanners, but none were used to scan Abdulmutallab when he boarded. In Europe and the U.S., privacy concerns over the scanners’ ability to see through clothing have kept them from widespread use.

The technology was first used about two years ago to make it easier for airport security to do body searches without making physical contact with passengers.The idea of an electronic strip search did not bother Judy Yeager, 62, of Sarasota, Fla., as she prepared to depart Las Vegas. She stood in the full-body scanner Wednesday afternoon and held her arms up as a security official guided her through the gray closet-sized booth.”If it’s going to protect a whole airplane of people, who gives a flying you-know-what if they see my boob whatever,” Yeager said. “That’s the way I feel, honest to God.”George Hyde, of Birmingham, Ala., who was flying out of Salt Lake City with his wife, Patsy, on Wednesday after visiting their children and grandchildren in Park City, Utah.”I’d rather be safe than be embarrassed,” Hyde said. Neither he nor his wife had been through a body scanner before.”We’re very modest people but we’d be willing to go through that for security.”

Trevino said the TSA has worked with privacy advocates and the scanners’ manufacturers to develop software that blurs the faces and genital areas of passengers being scanned. In all cases, passengers are not required to be scanned by the machine but can opt for a full body pat-down instead.At Salt Lake City International Airport, fewer than 1 percent of passengers subjected to the scanner chose the pat-down since the machine was installed in March, said Dwane Baird, a TSA spokesman in Salt Lake City.On Tuesday, some 1,900 people went through the scanner and just three chose not to, he said.Critics of the scanners said the option to opt out was not enough.”The question is should they be used indiscriminately on little children and grandmothers,” said Republican U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock of California. McClintock co-sponsored a bill approved by the House 310-118 in June prohibiting the use of full body scanners for primary screenings. The bill is pending in the Senate.

He said the devices raised serious concerns regarding constitutional protections against unreasonable searches.”There’s no practical distinction between a full body scan and being pulled into a side room and being ordered to strip your clothing.”To further protect passenger privacy, security officers looking at the images are in a different part of the airport and are not allowed to take any recording devices into the room with them, Trevino said. The images captured by the scanners cannot be stored, transmitted or printed in any way.But the TSA still has some public relations work ahead of it, judging by the reactions of passengers in Albuquerque, N.M., who were worried about what would happen to their images once they were scanned.”Are they going to be recorded or do they just scan them and that’s the end of them? How are these TSA people going to be using them? That’s a real concern for me,” said Courtney Best-Trujillo of Santa Fe, N.M., who was flying to Los Angeles on Wednesday.

The six airports where full body scanners are being used for what TSA calls “primary screenings” are: Albuquerque, N.M.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Miami, Fla.; San Francisco; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Tulsa, Okla.The remainder of the machines are being used for secondary screenings in Atlanta, Ga.; Baltimore/Washington; Denver, Colo.; Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas; Indianapolis, Ind.; Jacksonville and Tampa, Fla.; Los Angeles; Phoenix, Ariz.; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; Ronald Reagan Washington National; and Detroit, Mich.

Though most passengers interviewed by The Associated Press felt security trumped other concerns, Bruna Martina, 48, a physician from the coast of Venezuela, said the scanners still made her feel uncomfortable.”I think there has to be another way to control people, or to scan them, but not like this,” she said as she headed back home after a vacation in Miami with her husband and two sons. She also does not think the scanners will thwart another attack.”They’ll find another way,” Martina said. “There is always somebody cleverer than the rest.”(Ap)

LOS ANGELES  Baron Davis hit a long fallaway jumper at the buzzer, and the Los Angeles Clippers dramatically snapped the Boston Celtics’ nine-game road winning streak with a 92-90 victory on Sunday night.Rajon Rondo scored 20 points for the Celtics, but missed two potential go-ahead free throws – actually three, including another that was waved off – with 1.5 seconds left in just the Celtics’ second loss in 16 games.Davis had 24 points and 13 assists for the Clippers, who snapped a three-game losing streak when Davis took an inbounds pass with a second left, pivoted and jumped backward for a perfect 22-footer. The shot gave Los Angeles its only lead of the second half.Rasual Butler hit a dramatic tying 3-pointer off a drive-and-dish pass from Davis with 8.5 seconds left.Kevin Garnett had 12 points and eight rebounds while playing mostly on the perimeter with a sore back for the Celtics, whose three-game winning streak ended two days after their impressive Christmas victory over the Orlando Magic. In the final seconds, Davis drove the lane and dished to Butler for a wide-open tying 3-pointer. Rondo then blew past Davis, who clearly hacked him on the arm during a layup attempt. The game clock expired during the play, but officials put 1.5 seconds back on the clock after video review.

Rondo missed the first free throw off the back of the rim, and he then missed another shot long – but the officials waved it off, saying the other players weren’t set in their lanes. Given a third chance, Rondo still couldn’t connect, clanging his shot in and out.Boston coach Doc Rivers doesn’t expect Pierce to join the Celtics on their four-game road trip, keeping him home to rest his infected right knee. Rivers said the Los Angeles native’s condition fluctuates, and nobody is certain whether Pierce will play even when the Celtics return home.

Marcus Camby was inactive for the Clippers after aggravating his hyperextended left knee in their Christmas night loss at Phoenix. Coach Mike Dunleavy isn’t certain when he’ll be back.
