Morelia, Mexico Gunmen attacked police in the state of Michoacan in western Mexico, Monday, killing 10 police officers and injuring several other police officers. Some officials from the ministries of public security mmengatakan Mexico, in the early morning attack took place in the town of Zitacuaro and several attackers were killed in the gunfight. “In the attack, the federal police to strike back, killing several attackers, and injuring several others,” according to a press statement quoted by AFP.

Michoacan is the headquarters of the cartel “La Familia” which is known as one of the most deadly drug-trafficking organizations in Mexico. The attack happened when a number of police officers do not wear uniforms to travel by car through Mexico to the capital city of Zitacuaro.

After the attack, soldiers and federal police closed the area and launched a search for the attackers. According to police, the assailants fled and bringing gang members dead and wounded. The attack happened at about 7:30 pm local time (12:30 GMT) and was followed by fierce crossfire and other smaller clashes near where the attack on the policeman.

La Familia, which it says will be a major producer of synthetic drugs in Mexico, has launched a deadly attack on police in July last year which caused the deaths of 16 officers. In other attacks recently, the drug cartel has kidnapped 12 federal police officers, decapitate their captives before throwing their bodies in a busy highway.

Michoacan is the home province of President Felipe Calderon, and in the province he launched a nationwide hard action against drug trafficking, by deploying about 50,000 police in Mexico for nearly four years ago. Increased efforts by the government against illegal drugs, which was launched in December 2006, has caused a wave of violence that has ripped Mexico since then, mainly in its northern border with the United States, and has resulted in more than 22 700 people have been killed so far.
